Pembrokeshire Leisure
Swim Surf Scheme The Day’s Activities was a great success!

The morning session was based in the swimming pool where our fully qualified British
Surfing Association Instructors and Beach lifeguards will run the children through the first
stages of learning how to surf, introducing them to the equipment, how to ride a surfboard
and catch waves, before heading to the beach for an afternoon’s experience to remember.
Safety is the key factor and the children were taken through beach and sea safety and
awareness of their surroundings, whilst at the sometime they have a great time
and learn a lot about the natural environment. The children were taken through the BSA Young
Junior Athletes Surf Scheme which has five levels(from day 1 beginner through to competition level). The scheme is mainly practical but does include
some theory such as teaching the children about wave prediction, tides, water safety etc.
All you needed to bring was a swimming costume and a towel, all the equipment was provided by Outer Reef Surf School.

The Swim Surf Days took place on the Pembrokeshire Coast:

Newgale, Broadhaven, Freshwater West, Manorbier & Whitsands Beach

Dean has been teaching surfing for the past 16 years and
has surfed in many competitions. He and his team of instructors that are all fully
qualified BSA surf coaches and beach lifeguards.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said the youngsters had
thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.

“They have been a wonderful introduction to a sport, which is both fun and which
plays an increasingly important role in the local economy,” he said.
“Pembrokeshire Leisure is to be applauded for developing such an innovative
scheme.”
Dean Gough & the Outer Reef surf school were delighted to have played a part in the
initiative. “he said.”30th
